Going out for a meal used to be one of my favourite things to do before I had children (and when I had a bigger disposable income…)

Whilst it’s getting easier to dine out as the children get older, I still get a little nervous before taking them somewhere new. This is a whole set of concerns that never occurred to me before having children:

  • Will there be a children’s menu with something they like on it (and not entirely consisting of chips?)
  • Is there something to entertain them whilst we wait for the food to arrive (and will we wait for ages?)
  • Is it served at the temperature of the Sun and involve various cooling methods to be employed to make it edible?

We have lots of lovely places to eat in Hitchin and the surrounding area. Some of them I reserve for child free times. Some I will save for when the kids are older (or I’m braver).

Here is my list of tried and tested places to take the kids for a meal out. Good luck!

Hitchin

Zizzi

21 Sun Street, Hitchin, Hertordshire, SG5 1AH

Situated in the centre of Hitchin just off the Market Square. This is one of my kids’ favourite place to eat in Hitchin. They offer delicious Italian food that the whole family love and we are always made to feel welcome by the friendly team of staff. There are activity packs for the children as well as children’s cutlery, high chairs and they serve popping candy and ice cream for pudding.  Importantly, they serve food all day from 11.30am so it’s a great for family dining option.

From 11.30am – 11.00pm Mon – Wed, 11.30am – 11.30pm Thu – Sat & 11.30am – 10.30pm Sun

The Angels Reply

Bedford Rd, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, SG5 2NG

This pub had a refurb a few years back and it’s a great looking venue inside with an indoor and outdoor play area – perfect for the kids. Food is pretty good pub grub – sharing platters for the Sunday Roast and crispy Italian pizzas are particularly good. There’s high chairs, children’s cutlery and a great kids menu on offer and provided it’s not too busy (beware rainy weekends) you might even get to relax while the kids play! Also a good spot for a coffee and a catch up with the kids in tow.

Food served 10.30am – 9.30pm Mon – Thu, 10.30am – 10pm Fri & Sat & 12.00pm – 9.00pm Sun

The Angel Vaults Inn

5 Sun Street, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG5 1AE

I know a Wetherspoons isn’t everyone’s idea of family dining but this is fast becoming a favourite destination for us because of the Wetherspoons app. You can now effectively get table service at our local Wetherspoons – just place your order and pay for it via the app and it’s brought to your table! They have high chairs, children’s cutlery, colouring and a great value menu for the whole family. Children’s meals include fruit too and my two love the yoghurt lollies for pudding.

Open 8.00am – 11.30pm Sun – Thu & 8.00am – 12.00pm Fri & Sat

Taste Buds

106 Bancroft, Hitchin, Hertfordshire SG5 1NB

This is a fantastic little sandwich bar offering a range of sandwiches, wraps, ciabattas and filled jacket potatoes and salads. It’s all made to order and although there’s not a specific children’s menu, they have always been happy to make whatever we’ve asked for – toasted sandwiches, cheese on toast, ham sandwiches etc. The cakes are delicious, as are the hot pork rolls. It can be a little cosy with a buggy but you can squeeze in and there’s also a courtyard out the back when it’s warmer too (it’s also covered so great even on a rainy day!)

Open 7.00am – 4.00pm Mon – Sat & 10.00am – 3.00pm Sun

The Rusty Gun

A Sunday carvery, children’s menu and lovely outside space plus a farm shop too. Really it’s all about seeing the pigs though so best visited on a day when you can head outdoors…

Open 12.00pm – 10.00pm daily

Waitrose

The Lairage, Bedford Rd, Hitchin SG5 1HF

Lunch bags including colouring and hot children’s meals. Another tea time saviour for me… Feed the kids whilst grabbing your free coffee (with your My Waitrose card) – you can also grab your shopping too if your bank balance allows. Can be a little slow on the weekends when it can get really busy. Great for a weekday lunch with the kids combined with a trip the the library.

Sainsburys, Third Avenue, Letchworth, Hertfordshire SG6 2HX

OK, it’s not the venue for a special meal out but this place is a life saver. Food the kids will love, great value (children’s meals also include a drink and piece of fruit) and you can nip around the shop before/after too! Also do a great breakfast.
