We have lots of fantastic play areas in Hitchin with a range of play surfaces and equipment meaning there is somewhere for all ages and all weathers!

Bancroft Play Area

Baby and junior swings, pirate-ship themed climbing and slide. In May – September there is also a splash park. Lots of paths for scooters and bikes and a bandstand. Tennis courts can also be booked for public use.

Surface is tarmac so suitable for all weathers. No refreshments or changing facilities but various cafes and supermarkets nearby. Car park next door to park (fees payable).

Broadmead Play Area

Play equipment including slides, swings and climbing apparatus.

Grass so can get muddy in wet weather. No refreshments or changing facilities available. Free on street parking.


Brook View Play Area

Play area suitable for younger children with swings, small climbing frame and slide and mini assault course.

Grass so can get muddy in wet weather. No refreshments or changing facilities available. On street parking nearby on Ninesprings Way.

Chaucer Way Play Area

Play area suitable for under 5s with baby swings, small climbing frame and slide, and balancing equipment.

Mostly tarmac so fine in most weather. No refreshments or changing facilities available.


Dacre Road Play Area

 Dacre Road, Hitchin

Dacre Road 1

Small park tucked behind Holy Saviour’s Church. Climbing frame and slide, swings and rocking toys.

Tarmac around equipment so usable in most weather. No changing facilities or refreshments available but not far to various cafes. On street parking available (check for restrictions).


John Barker Place Play Area

 John Barker Place, Hitchin SG5 2PD

John Barker

Large space with some slides, swings and rocking toys. Multi use games area. Part of planned regeneration project and in need of some improvements.

Tarmac around equipment so usable in most weather. No changing facilities or refreshments available. On street parking available.


King George V Play Area

Old Hale Way, Hitchin SG5 1XL

Great space next to Hitchin Rugby Club. Play equipment  for all ages including climbing, slides, swings and roundabout. There are also floodlit tennis courts and multi use games facilities plus outdoor gym equipment. Skate Park on opposite side of field too.

Grass surface so not great in the wet. Free parking but busy when there are training sessions or matches, otherwise on street parking available. No facilities or refreshments available but short walk into town centre for cafes and shops.


Kipling Close Play Area

Small play area at the top of Chaucer Way / off Kipling Close. Baby swings, small climbing frame/slide and rockers.

Tarmac surface for all weather playing. No refreshments or facilities available. On street parking.


Purwell Recreation Ground

Purwell Lane, Hitchin SG4 0NF

Fenced in play area for younger children including climbing frame with wobbly bridge, slide and swings. Play area for older children including assault course, large swing, swings, zip wire and climbing frame and slide.

Also two large football pitches, basketball court and outdoor gym equipment.

Ransoms Recreation Ground

Grove Road, Hitchin SG5 1SG

Ransoms Rec

Swings, slides and climbing frame plus rocking toys and large swing. Home to Triangle Community Garden. The Triangle Garden has a lots of natural play/discovery elements including a living willow maze, grassy mound, bug hotel, pollinators’ garden and wildlife pond (fenced for safety).

Basketball Court, 5-a-Side Football pitch, Football Pitch and Pavilion.

On street parking nearby.


Rosehill Play Area

Off Millard Way, Hitchin SG4 0QE

A hidden and enclosed treasure for children and families – with entrances just off Millard Way and Harkness Way. The park is safely nestled from roads and pavements and offers a great site for children to run free, play and have fun.

Currently up for closure by NHDC.

The park offers assorted playground equipment – from baby swings, full size swings, rockers, roundabout, see saw, toddler climbing frame and children’s curly wurly slide and climbing frame. There is of course the historic rocking horse too! The park is well used for picnics and gatherings – offering open grass space too.

Offering mostly grass surfacing with some areas of rubber mat flooring around roundabout and climbing frame bases.

No amenities on site, shops on Cambridge Road within easy walking distance.
Free parking on the streets adjacent to the park’s two entrances.


Smithsons Play Area

Climbing frame and slide, swings and balancing equipment.

Tarmac surface so suitable for all weather. No refreshment or facilities but close to Hitchin library, Waitrose and town centre.

St John’s Road Play Area

 St Johns Playing Field, St Johns Road, Hitchin SG4 9JP

Symonds Road

Grassed so not suitable for wet weather. On street parking only. No facilities or refreshments.


Walsworth Common

 Walsworth Common, Woolgrove Road, Hitchin SG4 0AT

Walsworth Common

Play area for younger chidren on sand, slide, zip wire, climbing wall and swings. Basketball Court and football pitches.

Grassed park area so not suitable for wet weather. On street parking available nearby. No facilities or refreshments but near to Millstream Pub and short walk into Hitchin town centre.
